A part with no drawing being captured by a 3D scanner before its CAD solid is built

Engineering drawings and solids for undocumented parts

From a part with no drawing to a solid and a drawing you own.

3D scan to CAD is the job that ends in a file. Send the part, CETS captures it on the Revopoint MetroY Ultra CMM Edition, rebuilds it as an editable parametric solid and issues the 2D drawing. You leave with STEP, native CAD and a drawing, ready for your shop, your archive or your next supplier.

Why the file matters

A drawing turns a mystery part into a purchase order.

Captured from the real part

The MetroY Ultra records the full surface, including the curves and blends a caliper cannot describe, so the solid starts from what exists.

A parametric solid, not a mesh

The scan is rebuilt with real features: holes, fillets, threads and datums. You can change a dimension in your own CAD without starting over.

A drawing a shop can quote from

Critical dimensions, tolerances and material notes on a 2D sheet, so any machine shop or supplier can price and make the part.

Checked before it leaves

The finished solid is compared against the scan and the deviation is reported, so you know where the model follows the part and where wear was cleaned up.

CETS delivers 3d scan to cad for machine shops, maintenance teams and plant engineering groups across Puerto Rico and the US mainland. The typical request is engineering drawings from parts that were never documented: a spare with no drawing, a component whose supplier closed, a critical part the plant wants on file before the last good one wears out. The answer is a parametric solid in STEP and native format, a 2D drawing with the critical dimensions, and an archive copy kept for the next order.

Scan to CAD is the front half of our reverse engineering service. When you also need the replacement made, the same files go straight to the printer; when you only need the documentation, the job stops here.

The deliverable is a technical drawing and a solid: engineering drawings with the critical dimensions called out, and a parametric model any CAD package opens, for parts in Puerto Rico and anywhere a file can travel.

How the job runs

Four steps between the part and the file.

StepWhat we doWhat you get
ScanFull geometry captured on the MetroY Ultra CMM Edition; worn or damaged areas notedA scan record, and the raw mesh on request
Mesh to parametric solidThe mesh is rebuilt feature by feature into an editable solid with datums and design intentSTEP and native CAD files, yours to keep

Deliverables

What is in the package.

  • STEP file of the parametric solid, readable by any CAD or CAM system
  • Native CAD file with the feature tree, so your engineers can edit it
  • 2D drawing with critical dimensions, tolerances and material notes
  • Scan mesh on request, for comparison or archive
  • Archive copy kept on file under your part number for reorders

Ask for a sample drawing package before you send the part. A redacted sample drawing will be added to this page.

When the file is enough

Three teams that need the drawing, not the print.

Not every part should be printed. Some belong on a mill, some belong in a vault, and some just need a number a supplier can quote against.

Machine shops that will cut it

Your customer brought a part and no print. We scan it and hand you a solid and a drawing, and you machine it under your own name.

Plants archiving critical components

The part is still fine, and there is exactly one of it. Document it now, before the day it fails, so the replacement is a purchase and not a project.

Suppliers who need a drawing to quote

A vendor cannot price a photo. Send them the drawing with the critical dimensions called out and get a real number back.

FAQ

Common questions

What do I receive at the end of a scan-to-CAD job?

A parametric solid in STEP and in native CAD format, a 2D drawing with the critical dimensions and tolerances called out, and an archive copy kept on file for reorders. The raw mesh is included when you ask for it. No printed part unless you order one.

How do I know the solid matches the part?

Before the files leave, the finished solid is compared against the original scan and the deviation is reported. You see where the model follows the part and where we deliberately cleaned up wear or damage.

How long does a file-only job take?

Scan, rebuild and drawing are the first stages of our reverse engineering process, which runs 5 to 10 working days end to end. A file-only job stops before the first article, so it finishes inside that window. The quote goes out within one business day of receiving photos or the part.

Have a part and no drawing?

Send a photo and a rough size. You get a quote for the scan, the solid and the drawing in one business day.
